Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
