Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
