A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
